Diarrhea from Rotavirus in Infants — More Dangerous Than You Think

What is Rotavirus?

Rotavirus is a virus that causes severe diarrhea in children, especially those under 5 years old. It spreads easily through contact with feces or objects contaminated with the virus.

Symptoms of Rotavirus in Children

Children infected with rotavirus often have these symptoms:

  • Frequent watery diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Fever
  • Lethargy, not cheerful
  • Dehydration symptoms, such as dry mouth and reduced urination

Symptoms to Watch Out For

If your child has the following symptoms, you should take them to a doctor immediately:

  • Constant vomiting
  • Refusal to drink milk or water
  • No urination for more than 6 hours
  • Sunken eyes, cold body, cold hands and feet

Rotavirus Prevention

The best prevention is the rotavirus vaccine. It is recommended to start vaccination at 6 weeks of age and complete the scheduled doses by 8 months of age.

What to Do If You Suspect Your Child Has Rotavirus?

Do not buy anti-diarrhea medication for children to take on their own, as it may worsen the symptoms. You should take your child to a doctor immediately and give them an oral rehydration solution to prevent dehydration.
