Diarrhea from Rotavirus in Infants — More Dangerous Than You Think
What is Rotavirus?
Rotavirus is a virus that causes severe diarrhea in children, especially those under 5 years old. It spreads easily through contact with feces or objects contaminated with the virus.
Symptoms of Rotavirus in Children
Children infected with rotavirus often have these symptoms:
- Frequent watery diarrhea
- Vomiting
- Fever
- Lethargy, not cheerful
- Dehydration symptoms, such as dry mouth and reduced urination
Symptoms to Watch Out For
If your child has the following symptoms, you should take them to a doctor immediately:
- Constant vomiting
- Refusal to drink milk or water
- No urination for more than 6 hours
- Sunken eyes, cold body, cold hands and feet
Rotavirus Prevention
The best prevention is the rotavirus vaccine. It is recommended to start vaccination at 6 weeks of age and complete the scheduled doses by 8 months of age.
What to Do If You Suspect Your Child Has Rotavirus?
Do not buy anti-diarrhea medication for children to take on their own, as it may worsen the symptoms. You should take your child to a doctor immediately and give them an oral rehydration solution to prevent dehydration.
