Shingles (Herpes Zoster)

It is caused by the Varicella Zoster Virus (VZV), which is the same virus that causes chickenpox. If the virus
spreads throughout the body, it causes chickenpox. However, if the virus enters the peripheral nerves, it will cause shingles.

Risk Factors for Shingles

• Individuals who have never received the chickenpox vaccine!
• Having underlying conditions related to the immune system
• Weakened immune system
• Insufficient rest, stress, and anxiety
• Alcohol consumption, smoking, etc.

Early Symptoms of Shingles

• The first sign of shingles is numbness and pain in a specific area. Additionally, patients will feel fatigued,
  have a headache, get tired easily, have a fever, and experience a severe burning sensation on the skin, similar to a fire or hot water burn.
• About 2 weeks later, a rash will start to appear on the body. Patients will begin to notice that their skin turns red
  or pink in various areas of the body. This can appear as small spots, wide bands, or long stripes.
• The shingles rash will erupt along the path of the nerve ganglia where the virus is dormant.
  It can also cause patients to feel a sharp, shooting pain in the affected area with the rash. However, symptoms at this stage are not yet contagious to others.

Who Should Get the Shingles Vaccine?

• Recommended for adults aged 50 and older with normal immunity
• Individuals aged 19-50 years with immunodeficiency
• If you have already had shingles, you can still get vaccinated by leaving a gap of 6-12 months after the infection
• If you have previously received the live-attenuated vaccine, you can receive this vaccine with an interval of at least 2 months
