Cataract Treatment
In the past, treatment involved using a small needle to dislodge the cataract lens from its position behind the iris. This method had the disadvantage that the remaining lens could move and obstruct vision again, leading to severe eye inflammation, secondary glaucoma, and blindness.
Current treatments include three methods:
- Traditional cataract extraction surgery: This method involves removing the entire lens (ICCE). The disadvantage is that the surgical wound is large and an artificial lens cannot be implanted.
- Cataract extraction and artificial lens implantation: This method is an improvement over the first method. It involves removing only the inner part of the lens, leaving the capsule intact (ECCE), and then implanting an artificial lens. However, the disadvantage is that the surgical wound is large and some patients may develop astigmatism.
- Phacoemulsification: This method uses high-frequency sound waves to dissolve the cataract lens and then implants an artificial lens. The advantage of this method is that the wound is small, heals quickly, and requires a shorter recovery period.
