What Symptoms Indicate Risk of Lung Cancer? Early Detection Saves Lives

Lung cancer is the second leading cause of death in Thailand. It results from abnormal growth of cells in lung tissue, where cells divide and spread rapidly to other parts of the body, impairing lung and respiratory function.

Main Causes of Lung Cancer

  • Smoking (both active smokers and those exposed to secondhand smoke)
  • Exposure to carcinogens such as asbestos and radon
  • Air pollution or PM 2.5 dust
  • Genetics or family history of lung cancer
  • Chronic lung infections or chronic lung diseases

Early Warning Signs to Watch For

Although there are no specific symptoms in the early stages, there are signs indicating the disease. Early detection increases the chance of successful treatment. If you or someone close to you has these symptoms, consult a doctor immediately.

  • Chronic cough lasting more than 2–3 weeks
  • Coughing up blood or blood-streaked sputum
  • Difficulty breathing or unusual shortness of breath
  • Wheezing or chest pain when taking deep breaths
  • Loss of appetite and unexplained weight loss
  • Fatigue and tiredness throughout the day
  • Persistent fever or frequent lung infections

High-Risk Groups to Monitor Closely

  • Long-term smokers or former smokers
  • Workers in factories or areas with dust and chemicals
  • Residents in areas with high air pollution
  • People with chronic lung diseases such as tuberculosis or COPD
  • Individuals with a family history of lung cancer

Recommendations

Regular annual health check-ups and lung cancer screenings are advised for high-risk individuals to increase early detection chances.
