RSV: A Tiny Threat Parents Shouldn’t Ignore

RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus) or Respiratory Infection Caused by RSV

RSV is a virus commonly found in young children, especially infants and those under 2 years old. This virus is a major cause of lower respiratory tract infections and may lead to serious complications.

RSV is a Virus in the Paramyxoviridae Family

It can spread through contact with respiratory secretions from infected individuals, such as:

  • Runny nose
  • Phlegm
  • Droplets from coughing or sneezing
  • Touching objects or surfaces contaminated with the virus. RSV can survive on surfaces for several hours.

Symptoms of RSV Infection

Often resemble a common cold in the early stages

  • Fever
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Sore throat

Symptoms may worsen, especially in infants and those with weakened immunity, and include:

  • Rapid or difficult breathing, or wheezing
  • Lethargy or lack of alertness
  • Poor feeding or refusal to eat
  • Severe complications such as pneumonia, middle ear infection, and bronchiolitis

Basic Prevention of RSV

  • Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer regularly
  • Avoid taking young children to crowded places or locations with large groups of people
  • Clean toys, utensils, and frequently touched items regularly
  • Adults who are sick should avoid close contact with children and wear a face mask

RSV Treatment

Currently, there is no specific antiviral treatment for RSV. Treatment focuses on symptom management, including:

  • Administering fever-reducing medication
  • Giving expectorants to help with mucus clearance
  • Using bronchodilators for wheezing symptoms
  • In severe cases, hospitalization may be required for close monitoring and care, including oxygen therapy, IV fluids, or mechanical ventilation

If your child shows signs of RSV infection such as rapid breathing, lethargy, or refusal to eat, consult a doctor immediately for timely diagnosis and treatment.
