Warning Signs Your Child May Have Allergies

Allergy is a condition where the body reacts to usually harmless triggers such as dust, food, pet hair, pollen, and more. Allergies in children are becoming increasingly common, especially in families with a history of allergies in parents or siblings. Recognizing the “warning signs” early can help prevent or effectively treat the condition before it worsens.

Warning Signs to Watch For

  • Chronic cough, especially at night or after waking up
  • Frequent sneezing, clear runny nose, itchy and congested nose
  • Wheezing or breathing difficulties more than usual
  • Red, itchy rash and dry skin around arm and leg folds
  • Chronic rash that improves when avoiding triggers such as cold air or dust mites
  • History of atopic dermatitis (eczema)
  • Frequent bloating, loose stools, or chronic diarrhea
  • Easy vomiting after eating certain foods like cow’s milk, eggs, or nuts
  • Poor appetite and below-standard weight gain
  • Allergic conjunctivitis (red, itchy, swollen eyes)
  • Sores or peeling on lips or tongue after eating certain foods
  • Multiple symptoms occurring together, especially after exposure to triggers

Risk Factors to Monitor

  • Family history of allergies (parents or siblings)
  • Living in environments with dust, cigarette smoke, or air pollution
  • Having pets at home or carpeting where children sleep/play
  • Introducing solid foods too early (before 4 months) or too late (after 7 months)
  • Premature birth or low birth weight

If your child has any of these symptoms, please see a doctor promptly for further allergy diagnosis.
