Enlarged prostate — a common condition in men 👨❗

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH)

The prostate is a male reproductive organ shaped like a chestnut. It produces seminal fluid, sits below the bladder, and surrounds the proximal urethra. Therefore, when the prostate is abnormal, urinary problems often occur.

What is benign prostatic hyperplasia?

Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a condition in which the prostate enlarges and compresses the urethra, causing a weak stream, hesitancy, and incomplete emptying. It is commonly found in men aged 45 and over, with prevalence increasing with age.

Symptoms of BPH

  • Weak urinary stream; thinner flow
  • Straining to urinate
  • Interrupted stream
  • Delay before urine starts
  • Feeling of incomplete bladder emptying after urination
  • Increased frequency, especially at night
  • Urgency—needing to rush to the toilet and inability to hold urine

If BPH is not treated, complications may include:

  • Acute urinary retention
  • Blood in the urine
  • Bladder stones
  • Declining kidney function leading to kidney failure
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Bladder wall diverticula (outpouching)

Men should monitor themselves for abnormal urination. If symptoms occur, promptly consult a urology specialist for diagnosis and early treatment to prevent worsening symptoms or complications.
