1 November 2024 | Author Children Ramintra Hospital

Adenovirus can be transmitted from person to person through direct contact, inhalation of droplets containing the virus, or consuming contaminated food or water. It is not a new virus—it has been around for a long time, is highly resistant to environmental conditions, and spreads easily, leading to periodic outbreaks.

Symptoms of Adenovirus in Children

  • Respiratory system: High fever, cough, runny nose, nasal congestion, sore throat, hoarse voice, snoring, labored breathing, and difficulty swallowing
  • Digestive system: Abdominal pain, diarrhea, vomiting
  • Eyes: Red eyes, eye swelling, eye pain, watery eyes

Diagnosis of Adenovirus

Diagnosis can be performed using secretions collected from the nose and throat swab or a stool sample to test for the virus.

Currently, there is no specific antiviral medication for adenovirus. Treatment focuses on relieving symptoms, as follows:

  • Sponge baths for fever reduction, antipyretics, nasal decongestants, suctioning of mucus and phlegm, and bronchodilator sprays
  • Oxygen therapy for patients with pneumonia
  • Fluid and electrolyte replacement to prevent dehydration
