Laparoscopic Surgical Procedure

• Most procedures are performed in the operating room under general anesthesia. After laparoscopy, some patients can go home immediately, or stay in the hospital for only 2 nights for recovery. This is because laparoscopic surgery causes less trauma to internal organs and the abdominal wall compared to open abdominal surgery with large incisions.
• Laparoscopy involves making an incision approximately 1 centimeter long below the navel, then inserting carbon dioxide gas through a needle at the umbilical incision into the abdominal cavity. This creates space in the pelvic cavity, allowing visualization of internal organs and performing surgery through a small magnifying scope inserted through the umbilical incision.
• The surgery may require 1-2 additional puncture holes at the upper edge of the pubic bone, through which surgical instruments are inserted to operate on organs in the pelvic cavity. When the surgery is complete, the doctor removes the instruments and evacuates all carbon dioxide gas from the abdominal cavity, then closes all incision sites with sutures.

2. With minimal trauma, recovery of internal organs and small abdominal incisions is better, resulting in less post-operative pain
3. After surgery, recovery is better and faster than open abdominal surgery, allowing patients to eat and resume daily activities sooner
