Wheezing Sounds! What Could Be Wrong With Our Child?
– The child breathes faster and harder than usual
– Wheezing or rattling sounds are heard while breathing
– Chest appears sunken and nostrils may flare
– Children who can speak may say they feel tired, have chest tightness, or difficulty breathing
These symptoms may indicate that your child has asthma.
Asthma can be caused by genetics combined with frequent exposure to triggers such as allergens, dust mites in pillows, comforters, mattresses, child’s dander, saliva on pet fur, pollen, and cockroaches. Other non-allergic factors include viral respiratory infections and exposure to cigarette smoke.
.
Children with asthma are like other children; parents need not worry excessively but should take extra precautions. Try to avoid allergens or triggers for your child. Wash bedding weekly, keep the bedroom well-ventilated with sunlight, avoid stuffed animals with fur in the sleeping area, frequently air out comforters and pillows, and keep pets outside or out of the child’s bedroom.
If parents suspect their child has asthma from the above symptoms, they should see a doctor to confirm the diagnosis. If it is asthma, the doctor will provide bronchodilator medication, and some cases may require oxygen support. The child’s symptoms will gradually improve.
