Intravitreal Injection

Intravitreal injection is a method for treating retinal diseases that has become increasingly common today due to its effective results. Injecting medication into the vitreous helps reduce retinal swelling and inhibits the growth of abnormal blood vessels.

Retinal Diseases Treatable with Intravitreal Injection

  • Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD) with submacular hemorrhage
  • Macular edema from diabetic retinopathy or retinal vein occlusion
  • Choroidal Neovascularization (CNV)
  • Infections within the vitreous and retina (Endophthalmitis)

Symptoms of Retinal Diseases

  • Blurred vision or distorted vision (metamorphopsia)
  • Color vision deficiency or altered color perception

Procedure During Intravitreal Injection

  • Visual acuity test, intraocular pressure measurement, and pupil dilation on the eye receiving treatment.
  • Anesthetic eye drops will be applied before the injection; the medication is then injected through the white part of the eye (sclera).
  • Lie still on the bed for the application of 5% Povidone-iodine antiseptic drops.
  • Follow the doctor’s instructions to move your eyes, then hold your gaze steady.
  • The doctor will inject a small amount of medication (0.05-0.1 ml) into the vitreous using a sterile technique.
  • During the injection, keep your eyes as still as possible; do not move them back and forth.
  • The eye will be patched after the procedure; you may remove the patch once you arrive home.

Post-Injection Care and Instructions

  • Do not rub your eyes and avoid getting water in the eye for approximately 3 days.
  • Strictly apply antibiotic eye drops in the treated eye as prescribed by your doctor.
  • Use a clean cloth dampened with cooled boiled water to clean your face instead of splashing water.
  • Minor side effects may occur, such as eye irritation, redness from subconjunctival hemorrhage, or seeing floaters caused by drug sediment. Some patients may experience slight visual changes. These symptoms usually disappear within 1-2 weeks.

Urgent Symptoms: Consult a Doctor Immediately If You Experience:

  • Severe eye pain, redness, blurred vision, or green discharge.
  • Fever or coughing.
  • Photosensitivity (light sensitivity) or worsening vision.
