What to Do When Your Child Has a Food Allergy

Food allergy in children occurs when the immune system overreacts to certain foods. Symptoms can range from mild to severe.

The most common food allergens in children include milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish, and shellfish.

Care and Prevention for Children’s Food Allergies

  1. Avoid consuming known or suspected allergenic foods. Observe and record allergy history carefully.
  2. If allergic symptoms occur, take symptom-relief or antihistamine medication as directed by a doctor.
  3. If severe symptoms appear such as rash, hives, swollen eyes, swollen mouth, difficulty breathing, frequent coughing, or wheezing, seek emergency medical care immediately.

Food allergies can be outgrown if allergenic foods are avoided for at least 6-12 months or longer, depending on the specific allergy.

Diagnosis should be clearly confirmed by a pediatrician specializing in allergies and immunology.
