How Dangerous Is It When Your Baby Frequently Falls and Hits Their Head? Should You See a Doctor?
These issues are common for parents when their children are learning to crawl, sit, and walk because this is the stage of self-development. However, frequent head bumps from falls should not be taken lightly, as neglecting symptoms could lead to serious, even life-threatening, consequences.
When your little one falls and hits their head, for safety, parents can follow these steps:
- Consider the accident factors such as falling from a height, hitting a hard surface, or bumping into objects causing wounds.
- Observe the child’s symptoms such as unconsciousness, unusual drowsiness, seizures, convulsions, severe headache, vomiting, or bleeding.
If any of these dangerous factors or abnormal symptoms occur, seek medical attention immediately for further examination. You can schedule a pediatrician appointment here.
If there are no dangerous factors or abnormal symptoms, parents can provide initial first aid by applying a cold pack or an ice wrapped in cloth on the head for at least 15 minutes to reduce swelling. Closely observe your child’s condition for at least 24 hours because some symptoms such as nausea, headache, seizures, or convulsions might not appear immediately but can develop within 24 hours after the fall. If any such symptoms appear, visit a doctor promptly.
Preventing accidents is extremely important. Never leave your child unattended or out of sight as unexpected accidents can happen in an instant.
