Ankylosing Spondylitis
Ankylosing spondylitis is a chronic inflammation of the spine combined with arthritis. Prolonged inflammation causes calcium deposits to form, leading to fusion of the vertebrae and loss of mobility. Some patients may also experience inflammation in other joints such as the ankles, knees, and hips, causing stiffness.
Symptoms of the disease include:
1. Chronic back pain or stiffness lasting more than 3 months without a history of back injury
2. Severe back pain at night, during sleep, and upon waking in the morning
3. Stiffness after periods of inactivity
4. Joint pain and arthritis in areas such as hips, knees, ankles, etc.
5. Other possible symptoms include fatigue, red eyes, skin rashes, loss of appetite, and more
Treatment aims to relieve pain, reduce inflammation, and prevent further complications. Current treatments include physical therapy to alleviate pain. In severe or long-lasting cases, surgery can improve mobility and quality of life.
Treatment depends on medical examination and diagnosis. Doctors will assess symptoms, provide treatment plans, and recommend lifestyle adjustments.
