Health Risks of Sleeping Too Little but Still Sleeping

Normally, people need to get enough rest, averaging 6-8 hours per day, to allow the body to fully recover. However, many tend to stay up late or suffer from insomnia, leading to insufficient rest. If left unaddressed, this can seriously harm your health.

First, let’s observe yourself to see if you’re getting enough sleep:
1) Waking up feeling unrefreshed, wanting to keep sleeping, and not wanting to get up.
2) Feeling sleepy and yawning frequently during the day, with a strong desire to sleep.
3) If given the chance to nap during the day, you can fall asleep immediately without struggling.

If you experience these symptoms, it’s certain you are not getting enough sleep.

People who sleep too little, whether due to working late or habitual late nights, will face various health issues such as difficulty waking up, oversleeping, stress, irritability, fatigue, and loss of appetite. These are just initial symptoms. If ignored, chronic sleep deprivation can develop, directly affecting brain function, causing:
• Narrowing of cerebral blood vessels
• Slower learning ability
• Short episodes of microsleep, also known as “sleep attacks,” where the brain briefly shuts down without awareness, which can be extremely dangerous, especially when driving or working.

Chronic sleep deprivation can also lead to serious health conditions such as colorectal cancer, heart disease, diabetes, mood swings, and reduced sexual function.

Knowing this, we should promptly improve our sleep habits to allow the body full rest, sleeping 6-8 hours daily to regain good health by:
• Exercising to refresh the brain
• Setting a fixed bedtime so the body can relax and the brain can prepare for deep sleep
• Avoiding computers or mobile phones before bed to enhance sleep quality
• Choosing a comfortable pillow and mattress that are neither too soft nor too hard

Finally, if you ever do not get enough sleep one day, compensate by going to bed earlier the next day to repair the lost rest.
