Chronic Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)
IBD refers to chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract with no clearly known cause. It includes two main conditions:
1. Ulcerative Colitis (UC)
This condition affects only the colon (large intestine). The inflammation is limited to the innermost lining, often starting from the rectum and extending upward. The extent of inflammation varies depending on disease severity. It affects males and females equally.
Common Symptoms of Ulcerative Colitis:
- Abdominal cramps
- Chronic diarrhea
- Bloody or mucus-filled stool
- Fever
- Nausea and vomiting
- Fatigue and weight loss
- Anemia
Symptoms depend on the inflamed colon region and severity. Severe diarrhea is a common sign.
2. Crohn’s Disease (CD)
This condition causes chronic inflammation of the digestive tract lining and can affect any part from the mouth to the anus. However, it most commonly affects the terminal ileum and colon.
Common Symptoms of Crohn’s Disease:
- Chronic abdominal pain
- Diarrhea
- Fever
- Bloody stool
- Mouth ulcers
- Anal fistulas or abscesses
- Loss of appetite
- Weight loss
- Fatigue and anemia
Other symptoms may include joint pain, persistent fever, and liver inflammation. If chronic symptoms occur, consult a gastroenterologist for an endoscopy to prevent complications.
