Warning Signs Your Child May Have Allergies
Allergy is a condition where the body reacts to usually harmless triggers such as dust, food, pet hair, pollen, and more. Allergies in children are becoming increasingly common, especially in families with a history of allergies in parents or siblings. Recognizing the “warning signs” early can help prevent or effectively treat the condition before it worsens.
Warning Signs to Watch For
- Chronic cough, especially at night or after waking up
- Frequent sneezing, clear runny nose, itchy and congested nose
- Wheezing or breathing difficulties more than usual
- Red, itchy rash and dry skin around arm and leg folds
- Chronic rash that improves when avoiding triggers such as cold air or dust mites
- History of atopic dermatitis (eczema)
- Frequent bloating, loose stools, or chronic diarrhea
- Easy vomiting after eating certain foods like cow’s milk, eggs, or nuts
- Poor appetite and below-standard weight gain
- Allergic conjunctivitis (red, itchy, swollen eyes)
- Sores or peeling on lips or tongue after eating certain foods
- Multiple symptoms occurring together, especially after exposure to triggers
Risk Factors to Monitor
- Family history of allergies (parents or siblings)
- Living in environments with dust, cigarette smoke, or air pollution
- Having pets at home or carpeting where children sleep/play
- Introducing solid foods too early (before 4 months) or too late (after 7 months)
- Premature birth or low birth weight
