Be alert for respiratory infections during the rainy season!!!

As the rainy season arrives each year, respiratory infections tend to resurge. With today’s environmental conditions making it easier for such infections to spread, it’s important to stay vigilant. The most common respiratory infections to watch out for and prevent include the following:

Common Cold

The common cold is caused by various respiratory viruses, such as adenoviruses and rhinoviruses. It is common during the rainy season and can occur at any age. Patients may have a low-grade fever or no fever along with upper respiratory symptoms such as clear nasal discharge, nasal congestion, sneezing, cough, and sore throat. Symptoms are usually mild and resolve with adequate rest, warm fluids, and symptom-relieving medications.

Influenza

Influenza is caused by different strains of the influenza virus. Patients typically have a high fever, headache, body aches, cough with phlegm, sore throat, runny nose, and fatigue. Some may also experience diarrhea or nausea and vomiting. Severe cases can lead to shortness of breath or pneumonia. Doctors may prescribe antivirals for high-risk or severely ill patients. Annual influenza vaccination helps prevent infection and reduces disease severity and complications.

COVID-19

COVID-19 is caused by SARS-CoV-2 and is now considered an endemic disease with widespread transmission worldwide. Patients may have fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, and fatigue. Some develop breathing difficulty, shortness of breath, or pneumonia. Healthy individuals can usually manage symptoms at home, but high-risk groups—older adults, people with obesity, and those with chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, chronic lung disease, or chronic kidney disease, as well as immunocompromised patients—should be closely monitored by a physician and may need antiviral therapy.

Pharyngitis and Tonsillitis

Pharyngitis and tonsillitis are caused by viral or bacterial infections of the throat. They can occur at any age but are more common in children. Symptoms include fever, severe sore throat, painful swallowing, dry throat, hoarseness, and tender swollen neck lymph nodes. If bacterial infection is suspected, doctors may prescribe antibiotics along with symptomatic treatment.

Pneumonia

Pneumonia is an infection of the small airways, alveoli, and surrounding tissue caused by viruses, bacteria, or fungi. It spreads via inhalation or contact with respiratory droplets from contaminated nasal or oral secretions during coughing or sneezing. Patients often have high fever, cough with phlegm, shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, and chest pain when coughing. Without appropriate treatment, pneumonia can become severe and lead to respiratory failure.

These respiratory infections can be prevented by keeping your body healthy, getting enough rest, wearing a face mask, washing hands frequently, avoiding sharing personal items, and steering clear of crowded places for long periods. If you develop unusual or severe symptoms, seek prompt medical evaluation and appropriate treatment.
