Conjunctivitis is a condition in which the conjunctiva—the clear mucous membrane covering the white part of the eye and the inner eyelid—becomes inflamed. This causes symptoms such as red eyes, irritation, and watery eyes. The most common causes are infections or exposure to allergens. With proper care, conjunctivitis can be effectively treated and cured.

What causes conjunctivitis?
- Infection. The most common causes are viruses such as adenovirus and enterovirus; it may also be caused by bacteria, fungi, or protozoa.
- Exposure to allergens such as pollen, grasses, and dust mites.
- Chemical exposure, e.g., cosmetics, chlorine in swimming pools, hair dye, or workplace chemicals.
- Foreign bodies in the eye, such as smoke, dust, soil particles, false eyelashes, or improper contact lens use.
What are the symptoms of conjunctivitis?
- Redness of the white of the eye or inner eyelids; swollen conjunctiva.
- Itchy, irritated, or burning eyes.
- Blurred vision; light sensitivity.
- Watery eyes (tearing).
- Yellow eye discharge, more common with bacterial infection.
- Difficulty opening the eyes after waking.
How is conjunctivitis treated?
- Artificial tears to reduce irritation.
- Oral antihistamines and antihistamine eye drops for allergic conjunctivitis.
- Antibiotic eye drops or ointment for bacterial infection.
- Oral antivirals for shingles (herpes zoster)–related conjunctivitis.
- Rest your eyes.
- Avoid rubbing your eyes; wear sunglasses to protect against wind and irritants.
- Temporarily avoid cosmetics and contact lenses.
If symptoms worsen, with eye pain or deteriorating vision, see an ophthalmologist immediately to check for complications such as corneal ulcers.
