Allergic conjunctivitis is inflammation of the conjunctiva caused by an allergic reaction to various allergens. It leads to symptoms such as itchy eyes, redness, and watery eyes — a common condition. Although most cases are mild, it can still interfere with daily activities.

Frequent itchy, burning eyes… it could be allergic conjunctivitis!

What are the common allergens?

  • Dust, smoke
  • Pollen, grass pollen
  • Animal dander, dust mites
  • Fungi (mold)
  • Cosmetics, perfumes, chemicals
  • Eye drops, contact lenses
  • Certain foods, such as nuts and seafood

What are the symptoms of allergic conjunctivitis?

  • Itchy, burning, irritated eyes
  • Watery eyes (tearing)
  • Red eyes
  • Increased eye discharge
  • Swollen, reddish eyelids
  • Light sensitivity (photophobia)

How is allergic conjunctivitis treated?

1. Medication

  • Use of eye drops such as antihistamine drops, anti-allergy drops, anti-inflammatory drops, vasoconstrictor drops, and steroid eye drops that reduce inflammation—but they should be used only as directed by an ophthalmologist and not for prolonged periods due to potential side effects.
  • Oral antihistamines may be effective if started early before symptoms worsen.

2. Self-care and allergen avoidance

  • Identify and avoid triggers such as dust, smoke, pollen, grass, animal dander, chemicals, cosmetics, and perfumes.
  • Wear windproof or sunglasses when outdoors.
  • Clean your home regularly and use an air purifier.
  • Clean curtains and carpets; wash bed sheets, blankets, and pillowcases frequently.
  • Wash hands often; avoid rubbing or touching the eyes.
  • Use artificial tears to rinse and lubricate the eyes.
  • Apply cold compresses around the eyes to reduce inflammation.
