Abdominal pain in this area — what could it mean?

Anyone can experience abdominal pain. Some people feel better after taking over-the-counter medication, while others suffer from chronic, long-lasting pain. Don’t assume it’s just a simple stomachache.

Pain Here, Problem Where?

9 Abdominal Pain Locations That Signal Problems

➡️ Epigastric pain (under the breastbone)

This is the most common abdominal pain. It often occurs when hungry or after eating. Possible causes include peptic ulcer and gastritis. If the pain is severe with nausea and vomiting, pancreatitis may be the cause.

➡️ Left upper rib (left costal) pain

May indicate problems involving the spleen. It is also seen in left-sided pyelonephritis or left kidney stones.

➡️ Right upper rib (right costal) pain

Right costal pain with jaundice (yellow skin and eyes) may point to liver disease, hepatitis, gallstones, or cholecystitis.

If you also have painful or difficult urination, right-sided pyelonephritis or right kidney stones may be the cause.

➡️ Periumbilical (around the navel) pain

Pain around the navel with bloating, excess gas, and diarrhea may suggest enteritis. If the pain persists, intensifies, and migrates to the lower right side—or if the pain involves the whole abdomen—appendicitis is possible.

➡️ Flank pain, right and left

If accompanied by burning or painful urination and fever, and tapping the back over the flanks increases pain, this may indicate pyelonephritis, kidney stones, or ureteric stones.

➡️ Suprapubic (above the pubic bone) pain

Pain during urination or dribbling may suggest cystitis or bladder stones. Cramping with periods, chronic pelvic pain, or a palpable mass warrants specialist evaluation for conditions such as endometritis or uterine fibroids.

➡️ Lower left abdominal pain

Cramping pain radiating to the thigh may indicate a ureteric stone. Lower left pelvic pain with fever, chills, and abnormal vaginal discharge may suggest pelvic inflammatory disease.

➡️ Lower right abdominal pain

Colicky pain radiating to the thigh may indicate right-sided kidney or ureteric problems. Sharp, localized tenderness may be appendicitis. Pain with fever can also suggest pelvic inflammatory disease. A palpable mass could be an inflamed appendix or an ovarian lesion.
