The heart is a hollow, muscular organ located centrally under the chest bone, slightly to the left. Its function is to pump blood, delivering oxygen and nutrients to every part of the body. The human heart is divided into four chambers: two upper chambers and two lower chambers. The right side of the heart receives deoxygenated blood from the body and pumps it to the lungs to be oxygenated. The oxygen-rich blood then returns to the left side of the heart and is pumped through the large arteries to the rest of the body.

The heart begins beating while still in the mother’s womb. The heart muscle is special compared to other muscles because it can generate its own electrical impulses. These impulses start from the upper right chamber (Sinus Node), spreading through the electrical cells present throughout the heart, from the right upper to the left upper chamber, and then down to the lower chambers. When the heart muscle cells are stimulated by this electricity, they contract, resulting in the compression of the heart chambers.
