Newborn Care During COVID-19

Caring for a newborn during the COVID-19 pandemic is similar to protecting yourself from the virus, but requires greater sensitivity and precaution. Key guidelines include:
1. Avoid contact with people and crowded places.
2. Be cautious not to touch the baby’s eyes, mouth, or nose with your hands.
3. Always ensure the baby consumes freshly prepared milk or food.
4. When breastfeeding, clean the breast and nipple with soap and water beforehand, and wear a mask while nursing.
5. Wash your hands frequently with soap for at least 20 seconds, then rinse with clean water.
6. Clean baby toys or nearby items with alcohol containing at least 70%.
7. Both the baby and caregivers should wear masks whenever it is necessary to be around others.
8. If a caregiver feels unwell or has a fever, they should rest, stay away from the baby, and have someone else take care of the infant.

During ongoing COVID-19 outbreaks, it is crucial to take extra care of newborns. Avoid allowing outsiders or relatives to visit the baby at home. If someone close to the baby shows symptoms or if the baby displays any unusual signs, consult the Newborn Center at Synphaet Lamlukka Hospital.
