Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease Caused by EV 71 Virus
Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease (HFMD) is a common illness in young children, particularly during the rainy season. It is caused by an infection with enterovirus, leading to symptoms such as fever, mouth sores, and blisters on the hands, feet, and body.
Vaccination can help boost immunity against enterovirus 71 (EV 71), the virus responsible for severe complications such as ‘encephalitis’ or myocarditis. In severe cases, these complications can lead to death.
- Recommended for children aged 6 months to 6 years
- Administered in 2 doses, 1 month apart
However, Hand, Foot, and Mouth Disease can also be caused by other viruses. To prevent infection, parents should teach children to wash their hands regularly, avoid putting hands in their mouth or nose, and ensure toys are kept clean. In case of illness, children should be isolated to reduce the spread of the virus.
